WHY NOT?

Give a bunch of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters, the theory goes, and they will eventually produce the works of Shakespeare.

Then why not give a primate a TB303 and a TR909 so he can create a dance anthem?

Researchers at National Association of Techno and Trance Music reported this week that primates left alone with a TB303 actually figured out how to use it.

"They did a lot of modulating," researcher Bebus McFaddenwood said today. "It was obvious they were initially confused by the control voltage and gate, but in less than 3 hours produced patterns. I think they were more interested in a minimal sound because they completely ignored the TR909. We are speculating that they were unable to sync both machines, but further research is necessary."

A group of researchers left the equipment with the 3 chimpanzees at a local Zoo, turned on the power and started recording.

Then, they waited.

"We observed that the lead male had turned on the 303 and began randomly pressing all of the buttons. He then turned on the 909 and became agitated. In less than 5 minutes he started bashing the hell out of the 909 and proceeded to urinate all over it" said McFaddenwood

"Another thing chimps were interested in was modulating," added McFaddenwood, "One chimp named happy turned the filter knob continuously for almost 6 hours."

Eventually, the Chimps produced 8 unique patterns in 3 different key signatures, and they were able to chain patterns together in song mode. McFaddenwood said that the study was done to prove that monkeys can make dance tracks and prefer to modulate rather than program drums.
